Hiring a carer for your home?

Define the care role before responsibility becomes unclear.

Reduce the risk of unsafe or unsuitable care, duties drifting beyond competence, gaps in cover and disputes over pay or procedures. Define what care is expected, what is excluded, when the carer works, how medication and emergencies are handled, and how concerns or changes must be addressed.

  • Define care duties and exclusions
  • Record hours, pay and attendance
  • Protect privacy and household information

PROTECTIONS IN THE CONTRACT

Create safe, workable care expectations.

A written role protects the household without asking the carer to work beyond agreed competence.

Defined care duties Record tasks and role boundaries.
How this protects you as the employer

You can set clear expectations for the care required.

Hours and attendance Set normal hours, breaks and notification duties.
How this protects you as the employer

You can plan reliable care coverage around written working terms.

Medication and emergencies Clarify authority and escalation.
How this protects you as the employer

The contract helps distinguish agreed assistance from clinical decisions beyond the role.

Confidentiality Protect health and household information.
How this protects you as the employer

Private information must be handled only for proper duties or lawful reasons.

Fair procedures Set a process for concerns and termination.
How this protects you as the employer

Performance or conduct concerns can be handled through documented steps.

Final terms depend on the care duties selected.

The contract cannot replace professional care planning, safeguarding or employment compliance.

Care depends on trust, but trust still needs clear boundaries.

Written terms help protect the person receiving care, the household and the employee.

Without clear written terms

  • Care duties expand beyond competence
  • Hours and availability become blurred
  • Medication and emergency roles are unclear
  • Privacy and monitoring expectations differ

With a SigSwift contract

  • Duties and exclusions are documented
  • Pay, hours and leave are recorded
  • Safety and incident processes are addressed
  • Both parties sign the same employment terms

A LITTLE MORE CLARITY

Frequently asked questions

Plain-English carer employment answers.

Can either party create the draft?

Yes. The household employer or prospective carer can create and share it.

Can the contract define medication duties?

It can record agreed boundaries, but clinical instructions, competence and applicable professional requirements still matter.

Does this make the carer self-employed?

No. The real relationship determines employment status; this template is designed as an employment contract.

Can monitoring devices be used?

Only where lawful, necessary, proportionate and transparent, with privacy protections.

Do we need a printer?

No. Both parties can sign online.

Are electronic signatures recognised in Ireland?

Yes. In Ireland, sections 13 and 19 of the Electronic Commerce Act 2000 recognise the use of electronic signatures and electronic contracts, subject to the applicable conditions, including consent. At EU level, Article 25(1) of Regulation (EU) No 910/2014 (the eIDAS Regulation), as amended, provides that an electronic signature cannot be denied legal effect or admissibility as evidence solely because it is electronic or is not a qualified electronic signature. SigSwift records each party’s consent to use electronic records and signatures and their active signing event. The usual requirements for forming an agreement still apply, and some specialised documents may require additional formalities.
