Considering a care role in a private home?

Know what care you are responsible for - and what you are not.

Protect yourself from unclear expectations, unpaid availability and being asked to provide care beyond your training or competence. Put duties and exclusions, hours, pay, rest, safety, monitoring, complaints and notice in writing before accepting responsibility.

  • Prevent informal expansion of care duties
  • Record pay, hours, leave and breaks

PROTECTIONS IN THE CONTRACT

Work within clear duties and safe boundaries.

Written terms help prevent responsibility moving beyond the job you accepted.

Role boundaries Define required and excluded tasks.
How this protects you as the carer

You can point to the agreed role if additional or inappropriate duties are requested.

Pay, hours and leave Record the core employment terms.
How this protects you as the carer

You can see when you work, what you earn and when you are entitled to rest and leave.

Safety and training Address hazards, equipment and necessary instruction.
How this protects you as the carer

The employer's safety responsibilities and required training become part of the written arrangement.

Privacy and monitoring Require transparency around monitoring devices.
How this protects you as the carer

Monitoring must respect lawful, necessary and proportionate limits.

Grievance and termination Provide a route to raise concerns.
How this protects you as the carer

You can understand complaint, appeal, notice and final-payment processes.

Review the care duties and safety requirements before accepting.

The contract does not replace employment, immigration or professional-care advice.

Care depends on trust, but trust still needs clear boundaries.

Written terms help protect the person receiving care, the household and the employee.

Without clear written terms

  • Care duties expand beyond competence
  • Hours and availability become blurred
  • Medication and emergency roles are unclear
  • Privacy and monitoring expectations differ

With a SigSwift contract

  • Duties and exclusions are documented
  • Pay, hours and leave are recorded
  • Safety and incident processes are addressed
  • Both parties sign the same employment terms

A LITTLE MORE CLARITY

Frequently asked questions

Plain-English carer employment answers.

Can either party create the draft?

Yes. The household employer or prospective carer can create and share it.

Can the contract define medication duties?

It can record agreed boundaries, but clinical instructions, competence and applicable professional requirements still matter.

Does this make the carer self-employed?

No. The real relationship determines employment status; this template is designed as an employment contract.

Can monitoring devices be used?

Only where lawful, necessary, proportionate and transparent, with privacy protections.

Do we need a printer?

No. Both parties can sign online.

Are electronic signatures recognised in Ireland?

Yes. In Ireland, sections 13 and 19 of the Electronic Commerce Act 2000 recognise the use of electronic signatures and electronic contracts, subject to the applicable conditions, including consent. At EU level, Article 25(1) of Regulation (EU) No 910/2014 (the eIDAS Regulation), as amended, provides that an electronic signature cannot be denied legal effect or admissibility as evidence solely because it is electronic or is not a qualified electronic signature. SigSwift records each party’s consent to use electronic records and signatures and their active signing event. The usual requirements for forming an agreement still apply, and some specialised documents may require additional formalities.
